Nature Poems

Whether one is watching a thrilling thunderstorm or looking up at a mighty tree, the experience of nature is one of awe. One cannot help but marvel at the intricate design of a single leaf, or the roar of a great waterfall. Time spent in nature is time spent realizing that you don't know it all and that you never will. The earth is meant to be enjoyed by its inhabitants. That includes keeping it in the pristine condition in which it was discovered. Everyone has a part of the earth that they relate to the most. Whether it is a majestic mountain range, a roaring waterfall, a bouquet of flowers, or the calm of the woods, these are places to get to know oneself and build bonds with family.

Mat Weaving - The mats are hand woven from strips of pandanus leaves. They are using the mats for special occasions such as births, deaths, and weddings. Woven mats are commonly  used for bedding and flooring and they are often passed down from generation to generation. In death, Tongans are wrapped in mats as a sign of respect and they are also dressed in black.

Tongan Foods

Food in daily life - our Tongan foods are root crops. They are cassava, kumara, taro , yam, giant taros etc . All root crops are cooked by boiling water or by underground oven (a Umu) and is usually sauced with Coconut cream.  Tonga also have their own leaf foods which are taro leaves (lu) and Tongan spinach (Pele). Tongan meats are free range chicken (Moa Tonga), Free range pigs (puaka) and Pacific pigeon. Tongan food is made up of foods from the land and the sea and they are also hunters and gatherers of land and sea.

Tongan dance

Our tongan dances are stories sung by singers and acted out by the dancers.  The words are represented by the movements of the hands and feet. A punake is a combination poet, composer and a choreographer, who writes the songs then trains and leads the performers.

Standing girls perform the ula. Unlike these, the kalao or wardance, was has no  accompanying song . The stamping feet, shouts of the leader, and rhythm of the drums combine to make this dance popular amongst visitors.

What are gumboots?     Gumboots are types of shoes and they were made about two hundred years ago. Why are they called gumboots? They’re called gumboots because they are made from the gum of the rubber  tree. Who have you seen wearing gumboots? Famers  and people wear  them in the rain. Why are gumboots useful? People wear them in the rain so they won’t get wet and some people uses them at work for safety reasons. Where do you buy gumboots from? The Warehouse. Are gumboots only black in colour? Yes they were but some are now made of plastic so they come in any colour. Research how much gumboots are and insert the link for the shop to buy them from. My Animated Story

the police dog

Today is Tuesday 26th September 17 we went to the court to watch the police dog 
the dog handlers were Collin and Grant and the dog name was Kase   . 

kase was 6 1/2 years old Grant came with the sleeves and kase chased after him . 

grant talked to us about what the dog can do to help the police officers . 

finally we went up to pat the dog .   

The Scary Doll

One day there was a family who lived in an old house. A new family came and moved to another house. They saw that the house was old but they moved there.

Then they went inside the new house. The girl saw an old doll who talked, her name was sister. She ran to her mum and said "there is a ghost! She is a doll and she talked to me"

Her mum went and looked for the doll but she was not there.
